Three Democrats File in Sixth District Congressional Race

Three Democrats have filed this week in an attempt to unseat incumbent Sixth District Congressman Andy Barr.  Minister and long-time social activist Nancy Jo Kemper signed her candidacy papers Thursday in the secretary of state’s office.  “I frankly think we need some citizen legislators, people who represent the average person,” said Kemper.

Kemper says she has the passion, fire, and support to win.  Although in a losing cause, Kemper notes democratic gubernatorial candidate Jack Conway won the central Kentucky district by 2500 votes.  “I don’t have any money.  I don’t have to do this.  I’m running because I think that things need to be said and people need to be listened to.  They need to feel their government is working for them,” Kemper added.  The Lexington native cited the affordable care act, preserving social security and Medicare, and student debt as priority issues.

Retired State Engineer Geoff Young is running for a second time in the sixth district.  He says his campaign motto on foreign policy is "Strength through peace."  “I believe in negotiations rather than the use of military force or the threat of military force,” said Young.

Young contends Barr is out of touch with many constituents.  “He has represented only the one percent of sixth district Kentuckians who are powerful, politically well connected, and extremely wealthy,” Young contended.

In 2014, Young garnered some 39 percent of the primary vote in his loss to nominee Elizabeth Jensen.  Also filing today to participate in the democratic primary is Michael Coblenz of Lexington Andy Barr is the only Republican who has filed for the sixth district seat.?
