The Kentucky House has passed a bill to create tax check off programs to support rape crisis centers and pediatric cancer research.
The measure would allow taxpayers to donate portions of their state income-tax refunds.
House members expanded the bill Tuesday to include the check off program for rape crisis centers. The expanded bill passed the House on a 97-0 vote and now returns to the Senate.
Democratic Rep. Chris Harris says rape crisis centers are underfunded. He says officials estimate the checkoff would generate about $50,000 each year for the centers.
The bill also would create a pediatric cancer research trust fund.
Advocates for the tax check off for pediatric cancer research include Jamie Bloyd, whose son, Paxton, was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago.
