The deadline to file for statewide office has come and gone, and now the fields are set for the May primary. Centre College Political Scientist Dan Stroup says while who's running and who's not creates interest among political insiders, the same may not be said for the average voter. "You know, the primary is not until May and the election then in November and it's probably not as important on people's radar screens as the basketball season right now, for example," said Stroup.
Stroup says, in the race for governor, Attorney General Jack Conway's prominence among democrats is likely partly responsible for a two person contest in his party. Retired engineer Geoff Young is the only other democrat vying for the nomination. Stroup says varying party philosophies may be a reason for the crowded field seeking the GOP nomination. "There are probably a more diversity of positions within the Republican Party and so that might also explain some degree of more interest on their part," added Stroup.
This year's Primary Election is set for Tuesday, May 19th.
