A recent change in local law will allow alcohol sales in Lexington for the duration of this Election Day. Prior to September, the sale of alcohol in Lexington stores, bars, or restaurants was prohibited while polls were open.
This year, the state legislature gave local governments an option to change the rule and the Lexington City Council voted to do so. Sherelle Roberts with the Division of Police says an increase in public intoxication arrests on Election Day is not expected. "It's Tuesday, it's still just a regular day, so I don't anticipate any activity that would stray from what we normally see on a Tuesday," said Roberts.
Just off Versailes Road, Joycie Johnson, Manager of Imperial Liquors doesn't think buying votes with liquor is prevalent today, but she's still not sure about the change. "I'm sure that doesn't exist now, but you still want people to have a clear favor mind. But everybody doesn't drink before six, but I don't know, it's just different. I guess times are changing," said Johnson.
Johnson doesn't anticipate a larger than normal crowd of buyers at her liquor store on Election Day.
