Toyota Extends Plant Shutdown Due To Coronavirus

wkyufm.org

An Ohio Valley automaker is extending its shutdown once again, affecting workers in Kentucky and West Virginia.

Toyota is extending its production suspension of all its automobile and components plants in North America.

The company said that includes its facilities in Mexico and Canada.

The facility in Georgetown, Kentucky is Toyota’s largest vehicle manufacturing plant in the world and employs more than eight-thousand people.

It also has a facility in Putnam County, West Virginia, with more than 550 workers.

The manufacturing facilities will remain closed through May 1st and could resume production on May 4th.

In a statement, Toyota said the decision was due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and a decline in demand for new vehicles.

For the weeks of April 20th and 27th, production and skilled team members will be paid four days each week and others will have to use personal time.
