NPR TV Critic Eric Deggans Speaks On Race and Media at EKU Lecture Series

NPR

NPR TV critic Eric Deggans is keynoting the EKU Chautauqua lecture series on February 11. Deggans is also author of Race Baiter, How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation.

Deggens spoke with WEKU's Tom Martin and the full interview can be heard on this episode of Eastern Standard or listen below.

Deggans is of the opinion that government regulation cannot solve the problem of bias and outright dishonesty in news media. He said people need to turn to advertisers in the business community and encourage them to be more careful about the media outlets they support with their advertising dollars.

“And once the profit starts to shrink, at Fox News and Newsmax and One America News Network, they will be forced to be more careful about what they broadcast.”

Deggans added that media consumers need to be more thoughtful about the media they consume and recognize what is fact and what is not.

The TV critic said communities across the country are becoming more diverse and some TV networks are noticing.

“I think they realized that the audience has grown more diverse. And if they want to stay in step with their audience, they have to provide shows that look more like the environments that people live in, or the environments that they want to live in.”

Deggans’ keynote speech at the EKU Chautauqua lecture series is called “How Changing Demographics Affect Media Coverage of Race".
