Although the mid-term campaign is long gone, the campaign signs live on because Lexington’s recycling program is, well, recycling them. Angela Poe is senior program manager at the Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works. She says people would be surprised how many campaign signs were thrown away.
“So this year we did a campaign sign collection. We're using the wires for our safe street sign. So we're reusing those and then we're reusing the campaign signs for a variety of things. We collected over 1,600 signs this fall from the campaign.”
Reusing campaign signs were part of a lively discussion about the future of recycling in Fayette County. Poe also says people are eager to recycle but often don’t understand what can go through the actual machinery operated by the city. To address that the city is creating a “Recycle Right” education campaign.
