Logan County Native Named Tourism Chief in Bowling Green

A new leader has been named for the Bowling Green Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

When Sherry Murphy takes the helm, it will be a homecoming of sorts.  Murphy is a Logan County native and graduate of Western Kentucky University.  She says that she’s always had an eye on Bowling Green and what is has to offer.

"The number of attractions there in Bowling Green really makes it a tourism mecca of activity there," Murphy told WKU Public Radio.

Murphy says attractions like the Corvette Museum, Motorsports Park, Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center, and the Aviation Heritage Museum make Bowling Green a major tourism draw.

Murphy currently heads the Elizabethtown Tourism and Convention Bureau where her accomplishments include the 2012 opening of the Elizabethtown Sports Park, a 156-acre tournament facility.  Murphy has also led efforts to attract the High School Basketball Hall of Fame and a Vietnam Veterans replica wall.

“Sherry Murphy brings 18 years’ experience as a successful executive director of the Elizabethtown Tourism and Convention Bureau and has held leadership offices at both the Kentucky Travel Industry Association and the Kentucky Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus," said Larry Bailey, the Bowling Green Area CVB’s board chairman. "The board was impressed with the growth Sherry oversaw while she worked in Elizabethtown, and we’re confident that she’ll bring that spirit to Bowling Green.”

She will begin her new duties at the Bowling Green Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau on November 12.  Murphy will replace executive director Vicki Fitch who is retiring.
