The future of Lexington’s vibrant rainbow crosswalks has been cloudy because of safety concerns. But city officials are looking into those claims.
The crosswalks added this summer were created to honor the LGBTQ community during Lexington's annual Pride Festival.
But federal officials have raised safety concerns and asked that the crosswalks around the courthouse square downtown be removed.
Public Works Commissioner Dowell Hoskins-Squire told the urban county council the city is researching the dilemma. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports similar crosswalks in other cities have not raised similar concerns. And city officials said there hasn't been an uptick in incidents at the crosswalks.
The Federal Highway Administration asked Mayor Jim Gray last month to paint over the rainbows because they distract drivers and pedestrians and could lead to accidents.
