Family Recants Report that Lexington Woman, Husband Found Alive in Brussels

Relatives of Lexington native Stephanie Shults, and her husband, Justin Shults, reported Wednesday that the couple had been found alive at a hospital in Brussels after the terror attacks there.

But according to the Lexington Herald Leader, Justin Shults' brother, Levi Sutton, retracted his statement Wednesday evening on Twitter. Sutton posted that the family had received some misinformation from the State Department.

Family members say a Lexington woman and her husband, who were reported missing after Tuesday's terror attack in Brussels, have been found alive. 

Stephanie and Justin Shults were reportedly at the Brussels airport saying goodbye to Stephanie’s mother, who had been visiting, when the attacks occurred.

WKYT-TV reports Justin Shults's brother Tweeted Wednesday: "State department just told my mom Justin & Steph were found. We do not know the severity of their injuries or what hospital they're at."

In a second Tweet, he said: "We are trying to make sure there is as little misinformation out there as possible so again this is all we know at this time. Keep praying"

Stephanie is a graduate of Bryan Station High School and Transylvania University. She received her master's degree at Vanderbilt and had recently moved to Brussels for work. 

A couple with ties to Lexington is reportedly missing after the terror attacks in Brussels.  Family members say they’ve had no contact with the pair since the explosions on Tuesday.

Betty Newsome told WKYT-TV that her sister, Carolyn Moore, was in Brussels visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Justin Shults. Moore was reportedly at the airport heading back to the U.S. when the attacks occurred.

Newsome said her sister had not been able to reach Stephanie and Justin Shults since the explosion.

Congressman Andy Barr’s office issued a statement Tuesday afternoon:

"We are aware of this situation and our office has contacted the State Department in an effort to account for the couple and reconnect them with their family. We have no other information at this time, but we are committed to doing everything possible to help them find their loved ones."
