Proposed improvements for US Highway 25 between London and Corbin are up for public review tonight. The State Transportation Cabinet meeting comes after two years of study and citizen comment. Transportation Cabinet spokesman Jonathon Dobson says deadly accidents are common on the nine-mile stretch of roadway.
“It would not be a matter of hyperbole to say that the need for this project is made apparent to the motorists in the area on a weekly basis. It seems that unfortunately we see serious accident there regularly, far too regularly,” said Dobson.
Dobson says this portion of 25 has safety and congestion problems. Dobson adds the proposed improvements cover a lot of ground.
“They involve widening the road. Improvement of the various interchanges, access management for all of the businesses and subdivisions and so on. So, it is quite a mammoth project,” added Dobson.
Dobson says the general assembly has not yet funded the project. So he says any bulldozing is still years away.
“Once you have a design, the work has really just begun because then you have to go to folks that own property in the area and negotiate with them. The many utilities that are present, water, sewer, electric, natural gas; those have to be dealt with,” said Dobson.
The public meeting is this evening at the Hunter Hills Elementary School in Corbin. It begins at 5:00 pm.
