Kentucky U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell says the toughest possible sanctions should be imposed on Russia in what the minority leader labels an “invasion” of Ukraine. The veteran Republican participated in Commerce Lexington’s Public Policy Luncheon Tuesday. McConnell said the U.S. pullout of Afghanistan emboldened Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“I don’t believe Vladimir Putin would have a couple hundred thousand troops on the border of Ukraine had we not precipitously withdrawn from Afghanistan last August."
McConnell said there’s zero chance of U.S. military involvement in the current Russia-Ukraine tension. The GOP congressional leader also argued the two trillion dollars in COVID recovery funding was too much and has contributed to record inflation.
Regarding President Joe Biden, he said historically, sitting presidents, whether Democrat or Republican, see their political party lose power in mid-term elections.
“I think that I can pretty confidently say that if the election were right now it would be a very good day for Republicans in the House and I hope in the Senate. By the way I’ve been the Majority Leader. I’ve been the Minority Leader. majority’s better."
McConnell is looking for Republican gains this November.
