A surgical team at U of L Health/Jewish Hospital in Louisville performed the world’s first bioprosthetic total artificial heart implantation in a female patient. The heart procedure occurred a week ago.
The investigational device is currently intended as a bridge to a heart organ transplant. The same team completed the nation’s second implantation last month in a male patient, also at Jewish Hospital.
A feature report coming up this Thursday on WEKU’s Eastern Standard includes a segment on this artificial heart program.
