Lexington is looking for volunteers for its LexCount survey, an annual census tracking people in the city experiencing homelessness. That includes people living in emergency shelters, transitional housing or who are unsheltered.
Jeff Herron is Lexington’s homelessness prevention manager. He said the count gives the city reliable information about what people are experiencing.
“We gain additional insight about the needs of individuals that are experiencing homelessness, like if they might have disabling conditions, history of domestic violence, and this really helps us to better plan for our needs, understand where the gaps are.”
Volunteers involved would visit locations around Lexington, count the number of people there and complete surveys. They would also deliver care packages and help them access shelters.
Herron said the census also helps build a stronger community.
“A lot of people that come and volunteer with us share with us that it really helped provide them with some insight that maybe they lacked previously about homelessness. Maybe it helped them to dispel some myths or stereotypes about who it is that's experiencing homelessness.”
LexCount takes place from 10-11:59 p.m. on Jan. 28. The city recommends signing up in teams of three-to-four people. Those interested in registering can apply here.
Each team must provide its own transportation. Teams can also request to be joined by a Lexington Police Department officer. A training webinar is also required to be completed before Jan. 28.
