Three of the four Council members cite financial reasons for not seeking re-election

Another Lexington City Council member has announced they will not be seeking re-election at the end of their term.

Councilmember Liz Sheehan announced on Friday that she will not be seeking re-election. In a press release, she said the decision is the result of several personal and professional factors.

In her statement, she said she respects her colleagues who brought the conversation about Council member compensation to the public’s attention and named a barrier that keeps too many people from running for or serving in these roles.

She said when financial constraints determine who can hold elected office, the Council cannot fully represent the people it’s meant to serve.

In a press release, she said, “While I am stepping back from elected office for now, my time serving the public is far from over. I look forward to future opportunities to uplift our community in the years ahead.”

Sheehan is the second council member, this month, to announce they aren't running.

Councilmembers Hannah LeGris and Jennifer Reynolds announced they are not running, also citing financial reasons.

In a press release, LeGris said, “I will not be seeking reelection for a 4th term. It is time to look for a role that is more financially sustainable for me, and open up this seat to another person willing to work hard on behalf of our constituents.”

Councilmember Dan Sevigny also announced he is not running again after what he called a “period of personal reflection.”
