North Lexington roads back open following storm, power outages

Major roadways in north Lexington are back open after storms knocked out power for thousands of residents last night.

Crews worked through the night and quickly restored power following the outages. The Kentucky Utilities outage map says more than 5,000 were affected at its peak.

KU spokesperson Daniel Lowry says the most problematic outage happened when a downed tree near Newtown PIke killed power for about 440 residents.

“It brought down that big tree that also snapped some of our lines. It brought down three of our poles and broke them,” Lowry said. “We had several other poles where we had to make repairs with equipment that was broken. So it was quite a scene overnight.”

Major roadways, including Newtown Pike and Citation Boulevard had been closed in the meantime.

Lowry still recommends caution when driving through the area.

“Our crews saw several vehicles at times, through the night and into the morning, that would go through barricades and around cones for blocked roads, and that creates a really unsafe situation, not only for our crews that are working, but for those drivers too,” Lowry said.

Lowry says nearby crews are still working to bring phone lines back up.
