The Kentucky state auditor’s office is investigating Fayette County Public Schools after public outcry surrounding a proposed tax increase.
The school board voted 3-2 to increase its occupational tax by 0.25% in May. It would cost Fayette County residents an extra $13 each month.
Attorney General Russell Coleman called the proposal unlawful last week, saying the school board didn’t provide enough public notice before going ahead with the vote. The board has since paused the process to implement the tax increase, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
A statement from district spokesperson Dia Davidson-Smith says the school system is confident a review will affirm a commitment to “excellence, equity and transparency.”
The tax hike would take effect next year if it goes through.
