In preparation for Memorial Day, a Madison County group is asking for volunteers to put flags on the graves of veterans Sunday. Spencer Guiley is one of the organizers.
“I was in a cemetery around Memorial Day out in Baldwin, and there was two or three flags there that looked like they'd been there for several years, tattered, worn down in the mud.”
Guiley said he called Richmond Battlefield Curator Phillip Seyfrit and, joined by Kenneth Baker, they decided to do something about it. Volunteers will gather at Flatwoods Cemetery in Waco Sunday at 2 p.m., then go to nearby College Hill Cemetery and Pilot Knob Cemetery in Berea.
“These are Madison County's hidden treasures. These veterans that have fought for our country, have stood for our freedoms, and they're buried right here in our own community. And Madison County has buried veterans going back to the Revolutionary War.”
Guiley said the flags are purchased with donated funds. Since 2014, Flags for Veterans—Madison County has placed nearly 10,000 flags on graves in Madison County, including some in Estill and Bourbon counties.
