Despite state and federal pushback on DEI, Lexington's year-long 250th birthday anniversary celebrates diversity this month

Lexington's annual Diversity — or Diversity — Festival is one of the events this month that will recognize the different people and places who live in or have impacted the city.

The theme of the City of Lexington’s ongoing 250th founding celebration this month is diversity. Christian Motley is the ambassador for the month of May for 250 Lex, the group organizing the city’s year-long birthday observance. He said while diversity is a dirty word in some communities, that’s not the case in Lexington.

“This month, we get the opportunity to really celebrate our people, the cultures that make up this place, but to also highlight the kind of community building that you can do when you celebrate connecting across differences, across different experiences and backgrounds.”

Asked if he’s concerned about backlash from the White House, Motley said in times like these, people must stand up for what they believe.

“There's not just one story of Lexington. There are many stories that make up this place. And if it's wrong to be able to highlight what I believe is the beauty that lives in that, the challenge that lives in that, but also the pieces that, again, make our community stronger and will make us stronger for years to come, you know, have at it, bro.”

Motley said this month’s events include the Grassroots Leadership Award ceremony and the annual Diversity Festival – with s-i-t-y replaced by c-i-t-y.
