Frankfort was among the cities hardest hit by floods as a result of last week’s storms. Evacuees are now beginning the process to get back into their homes.
Around 600 homes in Franklin County were evacuated, and 200 are expected to be defined either as destroyed or severely damaged. A nine-year-old child also died as a result of the flood.
Frankfort Mayor Layne Wilkerson says the flood’s crest nearly went over the county’s flood wall.
“We haven't seen a flood here since 1978 like this one, and most people that live in or around the river, they haven't experienced this at this level,” Wilkerson said. “So the city’s trying to get everything, provide the infrastructure for those people to get back into their homes.”
Wilkerson says there were dozens of rescues by boat.
“We don't have any indication anybody was hurt because of the flood since the flash flooding of last week, when we had the nine-year-old boy die in the flash flood, but since then, we haven't heard any injuries,” Wilkerson said.
Wilkerson says they’re encouraging victims to document any damage so they can get federal assistance. The city has also set up a flood relief fund online and is asking for donations.
