UK pre-pharmacy degree meant to bolster healthcare workforce

UK College of Pharmacy

A new degree program from the University of Kentucky will help undergraduates learn about the pharmaceutical industry.

UK’s Bachelor’s in Pharmaceutical Sciences curriculum includes courses in chemistry and drug development with more generalized science classes. It’s UK’s first undergrad curriculum at the College of Pharmacy in more than 25 years.

Eric Welch is the College of Pharmacy’s Director of Undergraduate Studies, and developed the curriculum. He says it’s meant for both potential pharmacists and those interested in healthcare more generally.

“We designed this to be a foundation that prepares students for any pre-health degree,” Welch said. “So dental school, medical school, vet school, we have a lot of students looking at physician assistant studies, PA school, and then, obviously, pharmacy school.”

Welch says it’s part of a push by the university to develop the state’s healthcare workforce.

“This really gets at some of those needs, whether it's preparing students to move directly into a healthcare profession, or maybe an adjacent field, something in the industry that's supporting those healthcare professions,” Welch said.

The program also includes more hands-on work, like clinical research and study abroad programs. It’s set to begin this fall with its first group of students.
