Fayette County Schools renews superintendent's contract

The Fayette County School Board voted Monday evening to renew the contract of superintendent Demetrus Liggins.

That comes as rival petitions both in support of and against Liggins circulated online throughout the past week.

Some residents spoke during a lengthy public comment period during the regular school board meeting offering their opinions.

Those in favor, like Leticia Preacely, say the school district has improved under his tenure.

“The district is outperforming the state at all three levels, elementary, middle school and high school, and graduation rates and college readiness have steadily increased in the last four years of Dr. Liggins’ time as Fayette County Public School superintendent,” Preacely said.

Those opposed, like Rachel Buser, say has excessively spent and misused resources under his watch, and pointed to the cutting of arts education programs.

“We have a severe problem of spending and of lack of transparency with this administration, and it is time that those concerns be addressed.”

The school board voted on Liggins’ renewal with a 3-2 vote. His new contract will go through the end of June 2029.
