Two rivaling petitions surrounding Fayette County Superintendent Demetrus Liggins are making waves online.
A petition last week originally posted by parent Rachel Buser called for the Fayette County School Board to not renew Liggins’ contract. It’s collected more than 1,200 signatures as of Thursday evening.She says she’s about overspending and the misuse of resources.
“As I have gotten more involved in my children's schools and volunteered more, it has become a common theme that I've heard from teachers and other Fayette County employees that they are feeling extremely under-resourced and undervalued,” Buser said.
Fayette County parent DeMarcus Lewis posted a petition supporting Liggins in response. It’s collected more than 1,100 signatures, also as of Thursday.
Lewis says the original petition discredits Higgins.
“It goes back to the same thing when we talk about a relationship, as parents with Fayette County Public Schools and leadership. Because we disagree with something that happens with Dr. Liggins’ decision, it does not mean that we have to, you know, X him out and not have him come on with another contract renewal,” Lewis said.
In a statement to WEKU, Liggins says Buser’s petition represents the opinion of a vocal minority, and that the school district has seen measurable success and growth under his leadership.
The school board will discuss Liggins’ contract renewal during their meeting Monday, Jan. 27.
