Lexington's recycling center reopened Sunday after the baler (shown here) and a fabric roof were replaced.

Lexington’s recycling center is open again – just in time for the holidays. Julie Hatter is plant manager of the city’s materials recovery facility, which was closed from December 4 through Sunday to allow workers to replace the baler and a fabric roof for the tipping floor.

“These were planned projects. We were planning on replacing this baler because it had kind of reached its end of its lifespan. And so we got probably about 14 years out of this baler.”

Hatter says the fabric roof was also nearing the end of its lifecycle and had already required patches. She also offered this advice for post-holiday recycling.

“The one that we ship the most of is our cardboard. And so we just ask folks to break down those boxes so they're flat. That always helps, and don't put any of the packing material in like some of those home peanuts. Those are not recyclable.”

Hatter said they can’t recycle plastic film and some wrapping paper isn’t recyclable, so folks should check labels before tossing it into a blue bin. Lexington Environmental Quality and Public Works is a supporter of WEKU.
