Lexington’s health department organized a community baby shower last Saturday to help expecting, low-income mothers.
The event at Bluegrass Community and Technical College provided attendees with gifts and supplies like diapers and wipes. But it also connected them with educational programs and insurance providers.
Expecting mother Diara Middlebrooks says the counseling services were
what stuck out to her the most.
“I just feel like every mom, when you're pregnant or after you have the baby, should do counseling. It just helps to decrease postpartum, and just helps you all around. You have somebody to talk to, that can relate to you,” Middlebrooks said.
Fellow attendee Emerald McGhee visited the baby shower with her mother. She says she felt connected to those in similar situations.
“I walked in here and my mom was completely blown away, just to see all the vendors and everybody. It's not something that I've ever expected to ever see, a community come together for single mothers at that,” McGhee said.
All the supplies were handed out free of charge. A presentation on infant safety was also given during the event.
