A Lexington nonprofit focused on helping those with housing insecurity is working to clothe those in need this winter.
Unity in the Community mostly works to help feed those suffering from housing and food insecurity. The cold weather means they’re also busy donating clothes like gloves, jackets, coats and socks.
Founder Jonathan Richardson works with the local branch of apparel company Fabletics to make those donations.
Richardson says he was inspired to start the nonprofit after multiple personal tragedies.
“I’ve seen the negative effects from gun violence and just violence in general, and I've seen so much negativity in the world that I just have a true inspiration to do what I'm doing,” Richardson said.
Richardson balances his work at the nonprofit with taking online classes at the University of Kentucky. He says it’s a way for him to give back.
“I'm just doing as much as I can to inspire people in the community, and maybe people can see what we're doing, and they can also reach out to us, or start a nonprofit also,” Richardson said.
Those interested in donating or volunteering can reach out to Richardson’s personal email at johnnyrich40511@gmail.com.
