The City of Lexington’s Waste Reduction Week is underway, with the motto of “reduce and reuse.” Halsten Higgins is a public information officer with the city’s Environmental Services department. She said one goal is to encourage people to properly dispose of signs they no longer need after last week’s elections.
“That is one of the programs we will be highlighting. Right now we’re doing special collections for campaign signs, yard signs. Those aren’t recyclable and they cannot go in blue carts, so we have collection drop-off locations throughout the city.”
Higgins said the city is partnering with several local groups in the effort – and every little bit helps.
“Reducing our waste is important, and we're highlighting reduce and reuse because they are more impactful strategies, sometimes ultimately. And it doesn't have to be a huge thing. Starting small is great. Everyone can do one little thing, and that is very helpful.”
