Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton is being honored as the Kentucky Nurses Association’s Citizen of the Year.

Gorton worked as a nurse before her tenure in both city council and as mayor. She’s also a graduate from the University of Kentucky’s College of Nursing.

“Nurses are a perfect fit for leadership in many places in our society,” Gorton said in a release. “We were trained to work within a team, and to identify paths of action forward.”

Gorton is being recognized for her work passing local health-related laws around Lexington. That includes a public indoor smoking ban and environmental reforms.

It also recognizes Fayette County’s fairness ordinance, which bans discrimination based on sexual or gender identity in housing and employment.

The Kentucky Nurses Association advocates for the profession in the healthcare sector, and represents around 90,000 workers.
