For the second time in October, officials at the Fayette County Health Department have issued a warning about a rabid skunk found in the Lexington area.
Public health officials in Lexington say the skunk tested positive for rabies. It was discovered by a resident around the Indian Hills and Stonewall subdivisions. Both of the resident’s dogs were exposed to the skunk and one was bitten. Proper officials have been notified.
The Health Department posted signs in the area Monday to alert residents of the discovery and a reminder to keep watch on their pets. It's also important to make sure pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations. The viral disease of rabies is transmitted from animals to humans by the saliva of a rabid animal, usually a bite.
