The Lexington City Council member accused of sexual misconduct by another Council member is responding to those claims.

Sixth District Council Member Denise Gray filed an interpersonal protective order against Fourth District Council Representative Brenda Monarrez. In the order, Gray alleges aggressive sexual misconduct on two different occasions, one dating back to 2021.

In a lengthy four graph statement, Monarrez said the allegations are, quote, “patently false.” She said she’s not sure what is driving the accusation, but noted the allegations come within 90 days of the Council election. Monarrez said she looks forward to the opportunity to have, quote, “all the true facts come to light with respect to the baseless accusations.” Monarrez said no court has yet made any determination as to whether any inappropriate conduct occurred.

Gray has made no public comments outside of the formal complaint. A protective order is in place with an evidentiary hearing set for mid-October. Until then Monarrez is only allowed to participate in government business virtually.
