Shawn Manuel says his friend Mike Huguely was a great youth coach and family man who loved to fish.

A Richmond man involved in youth sports for 35 years is being remembered as a very good coach – and person. Mike Huguely died Sunday. He was an assistant football and track and field coach at several Madison County schools, including Madison Middle, where Shawn Manuel met him in 2013. Huguely was the defensive coordinator; Manuel helped on the offensive side.

“Sometimes it was the little things that I gravitated to that just made me realize how great of a coach that he was, not so much just on how he knew the game so well, but he knew how to interact with kids.”

Manuel said his friend had been hired as Madison Middle’s head football coach for the upcoming season.

“We've lost a wonderful, wonderful man, first, wonderful family member, wonderful community member, I mean, and for my relationship with him, just a wonderful coach.”

Manuel said Huguely might be the only coach in Madison County middle school history to win championships at three schools.
