Parts of two roads on the west side of Lexington will be closed beginning next week for sewer work. Portions of Parkers Mill Road is expected to be shut down for a week, while parts of Cross Keys Road will be closed for a month. Charlie Martin, the director of Lexington’s Division of Water Quality, said the work is part of the court-ordered improvements to the city’s sanitary sewer system.
“This is one that we call the Parkers Mill Road trunk sewer. And basically, we're coming up across Versailles Road up towards Parker's Mill following the stream with an 18-inch pipe.”
Martin said the existing pipe is undersized, and the improvements will keep manholes from flooding when it rains.
“By the time we reach Parker's Mill Road, we're roughly about 13 feet deep in the ground, and we have to cross over and connect into the existing sewers that are on Cross Keys.”
Signs will be posted directing motorists to detours on four roads. Lexington Environmental Quality and Public Works is a financial supporter of WEKU.
