The Lexington Public Library system is beginning its ‘Summer at the Library’ series of events. It’s meant to help keep students’ minds sharp as the school year comes to a close.
“We've heard about the summer slide that happens, especially with younger students, maybe they get a little bit rusty on their reading skills or STEM skills over the summer,” library marketing director Kate Baughman said.
The series includes petting zoos, activities involving the arts and STEM, and even a workshop to learn about simulated, Shakespearean stage combat.
Baughman says the series is an option for families looking for free summer activities.
“When summer comes, you know, we need more programming to fill our days, and some families can't afford to have a paid camp, or a paid program,” Baughman said. “And it's great if you can, even families who do pay to go to camps and activities still come to the library for really free fun, quality programming.”
LexTran is giving free rides to all the library locations for Fayette County Public School students through the summer season.
The Tates Creek, Northside and Marksbury locations are also working with the school system to provide free lunch and snacks.
