Lexington officials were joined by members of the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development Monday morning to celebrate the opening of five new affordable housing units. The event was held in the city’s east side, just a few yards away from the new townhomes. Mayor Linda Gorton said the five families who’ll move in have all been homeless or at risk for homelessness.
“We all know that affordable housing is a growing challenge. And we could not meet the demands of the future without our partners, including the housing authority, nonprofits, as well as the private sector.”
The event took place in Councilmember Tayna Fogle’s district, and she said the new townhomes are a foreshadowing of what’s to come in the neighborhood.
“We will have people drive up and down Pemberton up and down Sixth Street, and they will look over and see the wonderful housing units that are here.”
Gorton said in the last decade, $47 million in city funds has been matched by $431 million from other sources to build or preserve nearly 3,500 affordable housing units.
