Lexington-Fayette County health department organizing weekend diabetes awareness expo

An expo organized by the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department aims to raise awareness for diabetes treatment and prevention.

Around 13 percent of Kentucky adults have diabetes, according to a 2021 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s three percent above the national average.

Maranda Brooks is an extension agent for the University of Kentucky’s Family and Consumer Science office, and is organizing the expo. She says it will include health screenings and discussions on how to manage nutrition and glucose levels.

“It's kind of a one stop shop where you're not just gaining information, but you're having some interactive things, and preventative tools to take in your toolbox,” Brooks said.

Much of managing diabetes comes down to staying active and maintaining a well balanced diet.

“We are recommending, as far as a maintained type of physical fitness, three days a week, getting at least 150 minutes in a week,” Brooks said.

The expo will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Office.
