An opportunity to rid the house of old and unused medications comes this weekend in Kentucky

Stu Johnson

This Saturday offers opportunities around the Commonwealth to get old and unused prescription medications out of the house. One of the med toss events will be held in Lexington. Corey Doane is a lieutenant with Lexington Metro Police. Doane said opioids are just one type of drug accepted Saturday.

“We have many programs for that as well to try to get people into treatment. But, this is also a way if they have medicine..some type of pain medication of some sort and they don’t want anymore, they don’t want their children to get a hold of it. You know, that’s another big thing..you know pets and children,” said Doane.

Lieutenant Doane said over the counter drugs along with vitamins, medicated ointments and lotions, and pet pills will all be accepted. Liquids, aerosol cans, and needles are not accepted.

The collected drugs are handed over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

“It’s all brought together and the Drug Enforcement Administration disposes of it in a safe way. They work with people on their side of this operation and they make sure it’s disposed of the proper way. It won’t get in our landfills and doesn’t get flushed down the stream and so forth,” said Doane.

In Lexington, the drop-off is at Kentucky American Water off Richmond Road. It runs from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00.
