Lexington's Catholic Action Center will host a rally/cookout Monday to protest HB 5 and remind homeless persons the battle may be lost, but the war isn't over.

Lexington homeless advocates and homeless persons will gather in Lexington Monday to rally against a bill that will become law after Governor Beshear’s veto was overridden April 12. Ginny Ramsey is director of the Catholic Action Center, which will host the noon event. She said despite improvements to House Bill 5, which supporters titled the Safer Kentucky Act, the bill still makes homelessness a crime.

“In general, it is still as criminalizing as ever. It is impacting so many people who are not criminals and are not addicted and are not mentally ill.”

Ramsey said Monday’s rally and cookout is a way to show they’re not done fighting.

“It’s the community coming together, to wrap our arms around them and say, we stand together in love, we're going to work on changes.”

On hand will be members of the Street Voices Council, homeless persons who hosted a luncheon in Frankfort during the General Assembly to try to persuade lawmakers to change the bill.
