The City of Lexington is hosting another round of home composting workshops, with the first scheduled for Saturday at McConnell Springs. Angela Poe is a senior program manager with the city. She said home composting is environmentally friendly in several ways.
“This composting can help divert food waste, which we don't take in our curbside yard waste bins, it can help divert that material from landfills, and turn it back into useful material for gardens and lawns.”
The first workshop is Saturday, from 9 to 11 a.m. at McConnell Springs, and it’s open to all Fayette County residents – not just those with city garbage and recycling service. Poe said composting at home leaves the composter with a natural fertilizer.
“With food-based composting, we're getting this material broken down to a point where it's pretty fine material. So sometimes that's referred to as black gold. It's just really good stuff to add to the soil.”
People who complete the workshops will receive a $50 dollar voucher to buy a composter online.
