Funding from the federal Department of Transportation is going towards improving Lexington’s New Circle Road.
The $22 million grant will see the north side of the corridor between Boardwalk and Brian Station Road reconstructed.
“This is one of the largest federal grants in Lexington’s history,” mayor Linda Gorton said in a release. “I went to Washington to talk to our congressional representatives and to the Biden administration about our safety concerns with this stretch of road. They listened, and we’re thrilled to have this funding.”
It’s meant to help address crashes in the area, and help improve access and safety for bikers and pedestrians.
The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government says there were 34 fatal or severe crashes along the corridor from 2015 to 2021.
The grant also includes funding for a city-wide public safety campaign and a new position within the urban county government to implement a safety action plan.
