Work is starting this week on the widening of New Circle Road in Lexington. This work ties in with future plans to construct a double-crossover diamond interchange at Leestown Road and New Circle. Lexington Public Works Commissioner Nancy Albright said the project will help with traffic flow on both roadways.

“Continuing to three lane, each direction, New Circle Road as that road has continued to get more and more traffic on it. And to accommodate a lot of the development, both commercial and residential on Leestown Road,” said Albright.

The widening of New Circle will occur between Leestown Road and Georgetown Road. A sound barrier wall will be built on the inner loop from Leestown to the Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge.

Albright said a similar crossover interchange on Harrodsburg Road has resulted in a big decrease in crashes. That interchange has been operating since 2011.

“Now that we are a little more comfortable with that setup I think for the most part unless it’s somebody new to the area. Everybody’s a little more comfortable with Harrodsburg Road at New Circle now. And so, I hope that in time we’ll be in the same place on Leestown,” said Albright.

New sidewalks will also be constructed along a portion of Leestown.

The anticipated completion date for the whole project is August of 2026.
