Ground broke Friday on the University of Kentucky’s new Health Education Building.

It will be a new home for students in the colleges of Medicine, Public Health and Health Sciences. It’s set to take up more than 500,000 square feet at the intersection of Huguelet and University drives.

UK says 77 percent of the building will be used for academic spaces. That includes classrooms, labs and simulation rooms.

The school hopes the new building will allow it to increase its capacity for student enrollment and help address the ongoing health care workforce shortage.

The Health Education Building is scheduled to open in 2026.
