The Lexington Police Department is organizing a Take Back Day this weekend for residents to safely drop off unneeded medication.
That includes prescription or over-the-counter pills, vitamins, ointments, lotions and pet medications. It’s part of a nationwide event run by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
“People have a lot of questions on how do I get rid of (medication) the safest way possible – this is a chance to do that,” Lexington Police Department narcotics unit member Corey Doane said. “We don't ask any questions, don't ask who you are, don't ask for an ID or anything like that, it's literally just a drive thru. Bring the prescription medication that is no longer needed, and you just hand it over to some of our volunteers or officers and head on out.”
Doane says these dropoffs make sure medications are disposed of safely.
“It’s about how do I get rid of them in the safest way possible, so it doesn’t get into the reach of children or someone else who doesn't need the medication, and we don't want it getting into our landfills, or rivers and streams,” Doane said.
The dropoff day is scheduled for 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Saturday at Kentucky American Water at 2300 Richmond Road.
