Officials with the Blue Grass Chemical Activity have gotten a historic stamp of approval by an international organization monitoring chemical weapons disposal.
The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons oversees the global effort to eliminate such weapons. Representatives of OPCW conducted the final systemic stockpile verification inspection at the Blue Grass Army Depot Wednesday. The international team verified that no nerve or mustard agent munitions remained in storage. The last chemical weapon was destroyed in the plant on July seventh.
The U.S., along with 192 other nation-states, agreed to destroy its chemical weapons stockpiles and former production facilities and halt the development, use, production, and acquisition of chemical weapons.
The Blue Grass workforce continues to support the safe storage and delivery of agent-contaminated secondary waste for disposal. The OPCW will continue periodic inspections for the destruction of drained, containerized rocket warheads.
