Kyle May and others wanted to raise money to purchase gender affirming clothing and other items for transgenders, but their plan to hold a drag show in Prestonsburg in March was cancelled after death threats. So, they decided to hold the show virtually, and between donations during the show and afterwards, raised $4,000.
“It was well worth it. And now it's helped us see that there are other ways to be able to raise money and further the cause. Without putting ourselves in danger.”
The Rainbow Closet will be borrowing space from the Ahava Center for Spiritual Living, at 168 Burt Road in Lexington. May says the non-denominational church has been helpful to him in several ways.
“I have my own history of religious trauma, but I've been actually attending Ahava for almost a year now. And what I really like about them is they are affirming, they are emotionally safe.”
The Rainbow Closet will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May said he hopes the free clothing bank will become a monthly event.
