The Kentucky Center's Bloodmobile helps the KBC extend its reach, particularly during the summer months, when blood donations tend to decline.

When summer arrives, some blood donors depart. That’s according to Eric Lindsey, the director of media and branding for the Kentucky Blood Center. He said the KBC has recovered from pandemic donor drop-offs, but an annual challenge is just around the corner.

“Summertime is when people are out and about, a little bit more, active, schools are out. So it just tends to lead to lower donor turnouts, in coupled with that is that you know that the need for blood, you know, never really levels off.”

This year, the Kentucky Blood Center’s “SOS” campaign – which stands for “Save Our Summer” – is designed to remind donors new and old that they are still needed.

“This year, we want to we want to try to ensure that people, everybody walks away with something in hand. So we're doing a lot of days of giveaways that we're doing throughout the summer. You know, this week, we're kicking off with Kings Island here in the Lexington area.”

Lindsay said the Kings Island giveaways will extend to the KBC’s other centers next week and in June for the Pikeville blood center. Movie tickets and to-be-announced summer donor appreciation days will follow.
