The City of Lexington is one of 13 across the country taking part in a program designed to assist the city’s environmental efforts. Jada Griggs, Lexington’s senior program manager for sustainability, said the new effort is a continuation of a program that started in 2012.
“We're in the process of updating our sustainability plan, which is ‘Empower Lexington: A Plan for A Resilient Community.’ And from that, the core team decided that getting a certification for LEED for the city is a good thing for the city of Lexington.”
Griggs said certification by the U.S. Green Building Council will not require Lexington homes and businesses to become LEED-certified. LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a widely used green building rating system.
“This program is actually there to help cities, work on sustainability, come up with plan, work on their targets, and they're there as support through this program.”
Griggs said Solarize Lexington, which offers discounts on solar equipment for homes and businesses, is one example of the city’s sustainability efforts.
