Lexington’s City Council includes six new members. They will meet for the first time Tuesday at City Hall. Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton said she’s been getting better acquainted with the new Council representatives.
“I’ve been working very closely with Vice Mayor Wu and having regular conversations with him. And I’ve had individual meetings with all the new Council members, and so you know, we’ll see how all this unfolds,” said Gorton.
Mayor Gorton said government divisions have submitted their budget requests and she is asking Council members for their top three priorities. The mayor’s budget speech will come this Spring.
An ongoing priority within the urban county government is affordable housing. Gorton noted a ten-million-dollar boost in funding came through federal COVID recovery dollars.
“It’s just a constant, continuous focus so that the people living on the edge don’t fall off on the housing piece and we have plenty of affordable housing,” said Gorton.
Gorton said the affordable housing trust fund, set up in 2014, has led to the establishment of 3000 units.
