Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton is retaining her position as the head of the urban county government. She easily defeated first-time mayoral opponent, Council Member David Kloiber.

It was an upbeat lively atmosphere before the results came and then the figures were released.

The election night numbers showed the experienced Lexington government official receiving more than 70% of the vote. Soon after the tally was announced, the 74-year-old city administrator said she sees herself as, quote “any other person;’ a mother, grandmother, and a registered nurse who’s worked with people her whole life.

“I’ve really garnered a lot of trust over the years and I think that most people want to have elected officials they can trust. And so I’m really thrilled and honored,” said Gorton.

Following the release of results, she was asked if she will feel more stress in carrying out her duties in a second four-year term.

“Oh I bet not. In the first term, we had a pandemic, we had racial protests, we had a wild economy. And those things don’t happen very often altogether. So, I’m hoping it’s not quite like that,” said Gorton.

Gorton said her ongoing priorities include a safe city, the economy, workforce, and quality of life along with new items of a space study for a new city hall and commemorating Lexington’s 250th anniversary.
