Eastern Kentucky University Football Coach Walt Wells is officially back in action. The third-year head coach suffered a cardiac episode on August 28th, just prior to the start of the season. Wells was in attendance for the Colonels' multiple overtime win at Bowling Green. During this game-week briefing, Wells kiddingly said the Ohio contest was a bit taxing.
“Going up a score and us putting it into overtime and then seven overtimes was a great test for my heart and everything, so I feel like I’m ready to go now,” said Wells.
Wells collapsed in his football office. Wells thanked trainers for their quick action. Director of Football Operations Thomas Bowling found Wells.
“For them to act, acted, and re-acted I should say and went to work quickly on me was phenomenal,” said Wells.
EKU Football Chief of Staff Gary McPeek has been filling in as head coach. Wells said McPeek was the right person for the job and said there was no bickering about who should take on the head coach’s role.
EKU opens its home schedule Saturday night at six against Charleston Southern.
