Eastern Kentucky University has named an acting head coach for its football team. It comes following the hospitalization of Coach Walt Wells.
Coach Wells, in his third year heading the Colonel football program, suffered a cardiac episode Sunday. Eastern Athletics Director Matt Roan has chosen Garry McPeek to serve as acting head coach. McPeek, with more than 30 years of football experience, joined the EKU staff in early 2021 as assistant director of football operations.
In a written statement McPeek said, quote, “I'm honored that our administration has the confidence in me to step in during this critical time," said McPeek. "Our main focus is Coach Wells and his health, and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
Roan said, “On behalf of the Wells family, we are very thankful for the amazing medical professionals who have been involved.” EKU is preparing for its opening game of the football season this Friday night against Eastern Michigan.
